Biking Trails

1. Chincoteague Island Bike Paths

• Distance: Varies (several miles of bike-friendly roads and paths)

• Terrain: Paved, flat, and easy for all skill levels

• Highlights: Ride through town, explore Maddox Boulevard, or follow quiet residential streets. The island is bike-friendly, with plenty of places to stop for food, drinks, and scenic views.

2. Wildlife Loop Trail (Assateague Island)

• Distance: 3.25 miles (loop)

• Terrain: Paved, flat, and easy

• Access: Start at the Wildlife Loop parking lot in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

• Highlights: A peaceful ride with chances to see wild ponies, egrets, herons, and other wildlife. Open to vehicles after 3 PM, but bikes are allowed all day.

3. Swan Cove Trail (Assateague Island)

• Distance: 1 mile (one-way)

• Terrain: Paved, flat, and easy

• Access: Connects Wildlife Loop to the beach

• Highlights: A quick scenic ride to the beach, perfect for those wanting ocean access without driving.

4. Black Duck Trail (Assateague Island)

• Distance: 1.5 miles (one-way)

• Terrain: Paved, flat, and easy

• Access: Runs parallel to Beach Access Road, connecting the Wildlife Loop to the beach parking area

5. Service Road (Assateague Island – Northern Pony Herd Access)

• Distance: 1.25 miles (bike-accessible section), 7.5 miles total (hike required after 1.25 miles)

• Terrain: Gravel, flat to slightly uneven

• Access: Begins off the Wildlife Loop Trail

• Highlights: Bikers can ride 1.25 miles to the D-Dike beach access area. Beyond this point, the trail is for hikers only, but it’s a great way to see the northern herd’s territory with some luck.
