The Chincoteague Pony Viewing Guide

The wild Chincoteague Ponies are one of the biggest attractions of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Whether you grew up reading Misty of Chincoteague or simply want to see these iconic ponies in their natural habitat, this guide will help you plan your visit.

Where the Ponies Live

The ponies do not live on Chincoteague Island itself but on Assateague Island, which is divided between Maryland and Virginia. The Virginia herd, managed by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, consists of about 150 adult ponies, plus foals born each spring. They are split into two groups:

• Southern Herd – About 50 ponies live near the beach access road.

• Northern Herd – Around 100 ponies roam a more remote area of the refuge.

Seeing the ponies isn’t guaranteed, but with some planning, you have a great chance of spotting them.

Best Ways to See the Ponies

By Boat (Highly Recommended)

A boat tour offers the best chance to see the ponies up close. Many local tours cruise along the coastline where both herds live. While sightings are never guaranteed, you’ll also have the chance to see other wildlife like dolphins, bald eagles, and shorebirds.

By Car

• The southern herd can sometimes be seen from the Beach Access Road leading to Assateague Island.

• If they are close to the road, you can pull over and view them safely.

• For a better vantage point, try the Pony Overlook on the Woodland Trail.

By Hiking or Biking

• The northern herd is more secluded and requires hiking or biking up the Service Road.

• Start at the Wildlife Loop parking lot, then hike 0.7 miles along the Wildlife Loop Trail to reach the Service Road.

• You can bike the first 1.25 miles, but beyond that, it’s a 7.5-mile (one-way) hike to where the ponies roam.

• This is a challenging trek but can be rewarding if you’re up for the effort.

By Bus Tour

• The Refuge Trek Bus, operated by the Chincoteague Natural History Association, provides a guided tour up the Service Road.

• This is a great option for those who want to see the northern herd without the long hike.

• For schedules and pricing, call 757-336-3696 or visit Refuge Trek Website

During Pony Penning

• The Chincoteague Pony Swim & Auction, held annually in late July, is the best time to see all the ponies up close.

• The ponies swim from Assateague to Chincoteague, where the foals are auctioned to support herd management.
